How We Calculate Your Impact

This calculator uses standard conversion factors to provide a reliable estimate of your trip’s cost and environmental footprint.

• Fuel Needed: For US units, we simply divide the Trip Distance by your vehicle’s MPG. For Metric, we calculate `(Distance / 100) * Liters per 100km`.
• Total Cost: This is the Fuel Needed multiplied by the price you entered for a gallon or liter of fuel.
• CO₂ Emissions: We use the standard U.S. EPA estimate that burning one gallon of gasoline produces approximately 19.6 lbs of CO₂. For metric users, the equivalent is about 2.31 kg of CO₂ per liter.

Tips for a More Efficient Trip

Small changes can lead to big savings on fuel. Before your next trip, consider the following:

• Properly Inflate Your Tires: Underinflated tires can lower gas mileage by about 0.2% for every 1 PSI drop.
• Drive Smoothly: Avoid aggressive acceleration and hard braking. Maintaining a steady speed is far more efficient.
• Reduce Weight and Drag: Remove unnecessary heavy items from your car. A rooftop cargo box can reduce fuel economy by 5-10% due to aerodynamic drag.
• Minimize Idling: An idling car gets 0 MPG. If you’ll be stopped for more than a minute, it’s better to turn off the engine.
